Robert Stanek

What with the numerous discussions popping up about various self-published authors who rely on dubious schemes to promote their books, I thought I might as well tune you all on to my latest project, taking on perhaps the most relentlessly driven of them all, Robert Stanek.

Robert Stanek is a self-published author. He writes (among other things) crummy fantasy set in the world of Ruin Mist, which, like most of the things that Stanek writes, has a truly idiotic title. These fantasy books, understandably passed over by all legitimate publishing companies, are self-published by Reagent Press, a (very) small “publishing” “company” that features “bestselling” “authors” Robert Stanek, William Stanek (also Robert Stanek)…and that’s about it. I’m sorry for the excessive quotation marks, but I’m only using these words in their very loosest definition.

And his books have a nearly perfect 5-star rating on Amazon.com.

How?

Well, Stanek is a very driven individual, one who is in possession of at least 285 different user accounts on Amazon.com (I take this number based on the number of five-star reviews his main series has gotten). He then writes dozens of glowing reviews of his books, comparing them to Tolkien, and J.K. Rowling (frequently saying that his are better). He is also known to go and write reviews of other, more popular books, using sentences like “In style of such bestselling fantasy authors as J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, and Robert Stanek” to make people think he’s actually famous, despite them never hearing of him.

When real people are tricked into buying his books, they tend to leave extremely negative reviews. Stanek got around this by pestering Amazon to delete the one-star reviews, engaging his detractors under various accounts and claiming they’re a trolling “hate group”, and writing even more five-star reviews. In recent months, Amazon has finally started to crack down on Stanek, and there are now a few one-star reviews that are up and have remained up for some time.

His website - www.robertstanek.com - is an ego-stroking wankfest that is made even funnier to peruse when you realize that everything on it is Robert Stanek writing about himself in the third person. On it, he describes his writing talents in nauseating detail, talks about his service in the armed forces (doubtful), and occasionally posts photographs of himself photoshopped in with Brian Jacques, pretending to be at an author signing (the picture is also on my sporkings site).

So I decided the spork the guy. I actually bought a copy of one of his books off of Amazon - used, there's no way I'm giving him any of my money - but it turned out that the book I bought was actually just the exact same story as his main series. Stanek pretends that it's his story "retold" from a "different point of view", but actually it's the exact same book, with a few chapters switched around, and a few words changed here and there, in an attempt to trick people into buying more books.

You can read the sporkings on my livejournal, or on  http://conjugalfelicity.wikispaces.com/ - posted simultaneously, generally speaking. As a little taste of the head-banging stupidity present in this series, here's an image of the map from the front of the book (red mine):

Interestingly, Stanek shares a trait with many other self-published authors in being extremely hostile to his critics. He claims (in numerous places) to have been under attack by a 'hate group' that is intent upon ruining his life and his career, and who have cost him millions of dollars through their vicious and illegal slander. Said hate group being, of course, people who point out that his books are shit and that he's a fraud. He frequently threatens litigation against websites that discuss his fraudulent behavior, and has his 'lawyer' send threatening emails from a hotmail account.

Gotta admit, though, those mountains in the maps are pretty cool. aesthetically, I mean.

as for the rest of it, well... I don't want to go near that with a 10-pronged spork.

I wish I had an icon that said 'cardinal directions: you fail at them', just for this map. O_o

:D it is pretty funny, no?

Oh, and kawnliee, you forgot to put a red circle around the very-much-not-southern "South Province".

Also, "Stygian Pallisade" cracks me up. Seriously. A fence of sharpened wooden stakes, owned by or related to a mythological Greek river which was actually a metaphor for time and the flow of life into death.

Stygian.

Pallisade.

The guy is Polish. In the name of all of Western - Slavic nations I would like to deeply apologize for this douchebag. Sapkowski should kick his narcissistic butt all the way to the Northern Sea and let the fish deal with him.

Or not. I mean... I'm encouraging people to hurt themselves in cruel and unusual ways.

The map is LOL.

I've seen this kind of thing before...

I was reading the reviews for Kingdom Alliance and came across this bit of boasting:

"Mr. Stanek is the author of many previously published books, including many bestsellers. Currently he lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and children. He is proud to have served in the Persian Gulf War as a combat crewmember on an electronic warfare aircraft. During the war, he flew numerous combat and combat support missions, logging over two hundred combat flight hours. His distinguished accomplishments during the Persian Gulf War earned him nine medals, including the United States of America's highest flying honor, the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross. His career total was 29 medals in only 11 years of military service."

and immediately thought of the claims made by another author...

Re: I've seen this kind of thing before...

:D nice.

Mind you, Stanek doesn't claim to be an inducted blood-brother of an Indian tribe that doesn't engage in blood-brother rituals and has never heard of him.

*shifty eyes* or does he...?

I love how on the map, the 'Great Forest' is smaller than the Vangar Forest. It might just be how it's drawn though...

I think somebody needs to pop his ego.

A couple more failings of his map:

-None of his rivers start in the mountains. Almost all rivers do, due to this little thing called gravity.

-One of the rivers starts in the Dead Sea (how original) and crosses the continent to end in West deep, a CONNECTING BODY OF WATER. At the top another rivers looks as though it may do the same thing, but I can't see enough of it.

XD one of the very easiest concepts to understand, is that rivers run downhill and towards the sea, and start in the mountains. Epic geography fail.

It's worth pointing out,

"Vostok" is the Russian word for "east".

I can understand if some "west province" or "east province" isn't all the way west or east. After all, for me to make it to the "Far East" I have to go west, and not only that, it's actually closer than the Near East! What's up with that?

Really, if he had some Empire with North, South, etc. provinces, that'd be one thing, but he has Provinces and Territories all over the map without any obvious rhyme or reason, especially those East/West Territories.

That's a decent map, until you realize that he apparently doesn't use the same definitions of "east" and "west" that the rest of the world does.

As for the books, they're shit from what I've heard (now I'll read your sporkery). I was once approached by his self-publishing thing, and ignored them.

Okay....Amazon really needs to cut him down to size.My favorite 'customer' review thus far.

"How can anybody not like this book. Coming off of the most recent Sword of Truth novel, I was looking for something new to start. After reading many reviews I decided to pick up Keeper Martin's Tale. This was a fantastic book. Stanek weaves a complicated plot of intrigue and mystery, that had me enthralled to the end. The characters, particularly the Alder family are portrayed with amazing depth. I felt myself drawn to each of them, particulary Adrina. This was a wonderful book and I highly recommend for all readers. Don't listen to the bad reviews, those people should go back to reading their picture books."

Bad reviews=stupid people.

No such thing as bad publicity I suppose. But he even has the GK vibe too....

Betcha in grade school he got straight-As in "Self-Esteem (TM)".

Stanek did a major spamming job on Wikipedia a couple of years ago. He used the same tactics that he does on reviewing sites (Amazon, B&N, audible.com) and created a dozen Wiki user accounts to create articles about himself and his books, as well as add info about his books into dozens of categories -- including literacy (how ironic).
